Hiring Information

Currently, the CSO Hiring Supervisor manages the hiring process for new applicants. The Hiring Supervisor completes all interviews and background checks for potential candidates and also uses experienced CSO's to help in conducting interviews. The supervisor is dedicated to adding individuals to the CSO team who are good representations of the program goals. The CSO program is looking for responsible, outgoing, and hard working staff who will enjoy serving their peers and promoting safety here at UCI and the Irvine community. We constantly maintain a diverse group of employees who come from different backgrounds and areas of expertise. CSOs are allowed to work a maximum of 19.5 hours per week during the school year and 40 hours per week during breaks.

To be considered for a position as a CSO, each applicant must first submit a completed employment application.

The CSO hiring process consists of 4 steps:

  1. Use our Online form
  2. Oral Interview
  3. The Background & Reference Check
  4. Fingerprinting

All 4 steps must be successfully completed before the final hiring decisions are made. Applicants may, however, be rejected during any of the 4 phases due to unsatisfactory qualifications.

The CSO starting wage is $8.25/hour. After completion of probation, wage is increased to $8.50/hour.

I. The Application

CSO Blazer

The application is scored utilizing a standardized point scale in which certain general requirements must be met. These requirements include, but are not limited to:

  • Being a currently enrolled full-time UCI student (UCI extension students do not qualify).
  • Having at least 1 academic year remaining at UCI
  • Having a current cumulative and quarterly GPA of at least 2.4.
  • Having a valid class C driver's license, and has not been previously suspended or revoked.
  • The ability to work 12-19 hours per week.
  • Completion of all parts of the application as required.
  • Work CSO shifts while strictly adhering to set operational policies and procedures.

Additional points may be awarded based on the hours that the applicant is able to work, the flexibility of the hours the applicant is able to work, work history, related job experience, current certifications, and any attached letters of recommendation. The accumulation of points in the application phase will be used to determine whether an applicant will proceed to the next phase of the hiring process, the oral interview. Please remember that due to the high volume of applications received it may take several weeks after your submission to receive notification of your application status.

II. The Oral Interview

The oral interview is a formal interview, and is scored on a standardized point scale. The applicant will be evaluated in various areas. These areas will include, but are not limited to: problem solving, communication skills, public relations, hypothetical scenarios, physical ability, skills and general levels of knowledge. A board of interviewers will ask various questions and pose varying scenarios in an effort to evaluate the competency of the applicant in the above mentioned areas.

III. The Background Investigation and Reference Check

This phase of the hiring process consists of the background investigation and reference checks. The applicant will be required to provide a minimum of 2 former employers that may be contacted for information regarding the applicant's past work history. It is very important to be accurate when providing previous work history. This will prevent delays in the background investigation. If you know that a past employer cannot be contacted, submit a letter of reference from that employer to prevent further delays.

Positions will be offered to the most qualified applicants based on the cumulative results of the oral interview, background investigation and reference checks. The entire hiring process will usually take four to six weeks, but can take longer due to unforeseen delays. Newly hired CSOs undergo an extensive 2-week training program, after which they are placed on probationary status pending completion of certain requirements. The length of the probationary status will vary with each employee.
