Public Safety Dispatcher Supervisor (Job. No. 2008-0578)

DESCRIPTION
Under the direction of the Lieutenant, the Public Safety Dispatch Supervisor provides direct supervision to dispatchers on assigned shifts. Interfaces with appropriate shift supervisory personnel from each agency served by the Communications Center to assure quality of service and to resolve problems. Conducts training of dispatchers on assigned shifts, as well as periodic reviews of trained individuals. Provides reports to the Lieutenant on the performance of all dispatchers on assigned shifts, and on all problems which may require management involvement. Insures proper maintenance, use, and operation of assigned equipment, materials, and supplies by reviewing logs, tape recordings and databases, and by performing site inspections as needed.
Hiring Salary Range: $57,548 to $71,400
REQUIREMENTS
- Demonstrated skills in the principles of supervision, including the ability to train, supervise, discipline, and complete performance evaluations.
- Ability to improve operational efficiency involving policies, procedures, methods, and systems by analyzing and appraising operations, methods, resource utilization, and administrative practices in order to enhance performance and clarify procedures.
- Ability to train new dispatchers in all aspects of the position and train police officers in the basic functions of the position necessary to provide relief to on-duty dispatchers for meals and breaks.
- Ability to train department employees regarding the use of all police radios, proper radio codes and call signs and procedures used for various calls (e.g., pursuits, ambulance calls, etc.)
- Skill in mediating between individuals or groups who are in disagreement.
- Skill in motivating personnel and organizing work flow to accomplish established objectives.
- Ability to delegate project responsibilities and establish procedures to optimize efficiency and minimize duplication of effort.
- Analytical ability to systematize clerical functions, compile information for reports, and to independently solve problems.
- Ability to train department employees regarding all emergency and business lines of Communications.
- Ability to train department employees regarding use of the CLETS system, including proper formats used and the legal requirement for sending messages.
- Ability to train dispatchers regarding usage of computer record files and CAD system, and how to summon assistance during emergency situations.
- Skill in exchanging ideas, information, and opinions with others to formulate policies and/or programs, and/or arrive jointly at decisions, conclusions, or solutions.
SELECTION
Applications will be reviewed by the UCIPD and Personnel Services Department. Candidates who meet the minimum requirements will be invited to continue in the selection process which will include:
- Panel Oral Interview: (Weight of 35%) which will evaluate the experience, training, and personal qualifications of each candidate for the position. Candidates need a score of 70% or higher to pass this examination and continue in the selection process.
- Written Exercise: (Weight of 10%) given to evaluate candidates’ ability to express themselves in writing. Sentence structure, grammar and content will be rated.
- PD Management Oral Interview Examination: (Weight of 55%) which will evaluate the supervisory and leadership experience of each candidate.
